SUPERKIND

Glad to see the Icehouse is back in the rave scene. With all the permits in order and the 18+ age limit, there was hardly any reason for the cops to shut it down and the party was still in full swing when I left around 4:30 am. I did hear some complaints about the "vibe" which everyone agreed was contributed to the age limit and the fact that there were a lot of people from Scottsdale in the crowd. But, this was really no different than the crowd at Pompeii on Thursdays so, there really shouldn't be any surprises here. I think it was fine if we didn't have enough "PLUR" here. That's why we have the underground desert raves.

I caught the end of the Groovetribe players set, performing live for the chill room. They were playing a mix of experimental jaz that although not very danceable, was an interesting departure from the usual established LPs. Lego was rocking the courtyard along with a few MCs when we finally got in and despite the awful base sound, the crowd was loving it. Some actually told me they liked the heavy base but I thought from many angles it sounded like blown speakers. Jason Ayers was hard at work projecting a barrage of video imagery, mixed on the spot to the music, on the giant wall behind the main stage. In the Silver Room (or the Dark Room), Markus Schulz was spinning one hell of a techno trance set and there was no more than a hand full of people that were not dancing. Carlos ruled over the Cathedral Room from the eagles nest and spun everything from reggae to retro for his five hour set. The smaller room (forgot what it's called) was reserved for hip hop and d&b, liquid videos, chillin', massages and the break dancers. It was the hottest room there so, I didn't stick around much.

Back in the courtyard, Lady Kier took over the stage only to face a series of mishaps with the sound system and the tables. Some said she was train wrecking a few tracks which I think was mostly due to the technical difficulties that plagued her set. But, I think her real live vocals redeemed her performance. In fact, I think she should hook up with a live d&b producer so she can concentrate on her vocals because that IS her real talent, and a very good one too.

Pete Salaz came up after Markus to deliver a heavy doze of hard house to the Silver Room dancers followed by Kevin Brown for more hard-core beats. Diesel Boy came up after Lady Kier and rocked the courtyard for the rest of the night.

I think this party was a great success and all who frequent Kind nights could appreciate it even more. Jas has become a seasoned veteran in bringing a lot of great talent to Arizona and deserves a lot of credit for improving and expanding the techno scene here.

First things first. I love the Icehouse, and think it is a great venue. But I do wish that there was something more they could do for entry. On line for a few thousand people kind of sucks. Especially in warm, moderately humid weather. Also, I can understand why they don't allow candy, gum, and stuff in, but water should be an exception. It doesn't stain, and it keeps us hydrated.

I got in and went to the 21+ room for a while, because it was cooled. Not very many people were in there, but the music was fine. Plenty of dancing space too.

Lady Miss Kier came on outside. I was very excited to hear her at first. But that kind of died. No one was dancing. Her mixing was like hearing trains wreck. And the MC kept coming and talking about the "love" we should be showing Miss Kier. I saw no love. Maybe it was the sound, maybe it was her mixing. But her set was not exciting.

Carlos was great. I danced more than anyone was outside with Lady Miss Kier. I went in to hear him until Diesel Boy came out.

Diesel Boy came on. What a tranceformation! He just took the vibe and brought it from rock bottom, to through the roof. I have to tell ya, I have a lot of love for Diesel Boy. He was my first DJ I ever heard.

After exhausting myself, and finding a spot in the chill room to relax for a while, I went into the Cathedral, and listened to Terry Mullan. So in there I did a lot more dancing, and even trying out new moves and totally tearing that dance floor up. It was a sweet end to a good party.

SUPERKIND was the BesT ParT-E of the summer and I am glad it was my last before coming back to school. I was kinda disappointed with not being able to hear Z-Trip and all of those in the 21+ room but it's okay I will have my day come soon. =) I am very happy for United Positivity/Groovetribe because the turn out was so AweSome. Carlos played a kick @ss set and so did Pete damn it left me in a daze. Just wish the weather could have been better but can't blame anyone but mother nature... So just wanna thanks everyone for putting a good end to my KIND summer...luv ya guys.

I have to say that I was not at all pleased with the party. I am from the midwest. I am new to the whole "dessert" thing. But it seems to me that EVERYONE is so freaking worried about the vibe that it makes me sick. If you dont worry about the "vibe" thats when it hits. I am glad to be out of the mid-west, but I will never forget the rave scene. Everyone there is so happy. All I heard at this party was, "Vibe sucks", and "I hate security." You guys are the reason that the party scene here does suck. I am a professional Dj, and I just have to say that I am glad I didnt spin this party. I also would like to say thank you to the great people who recognized me in the crowed to not say anything outloud...and Meg...thanks for the hits, and enjoy thee CD! :) one last note, I dont like the idea of 21+ and 18+ things at parties. I am a firm believer, along with the rest of the nation from OK to the east coast, that there should be NO DRINKING at raves. It is a fact that drinking brings problems...fights...and bad moods. Those do NOT belong at a party. Thanks for the time...Peace Love Unity Respect.
